Police arrests a hit-and-run driver

The Sunyani Police has arrested Onyina Gyawu, a hit-and-run driver for killing a 11-year-old pupil of Saint Joseph Catholic Primary School at Atronie village near Sunyani last Tuesday, January 22.

The incident occurred in the afternoon when the boy was returning from school with his colleagues.

Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Teddy Damptey Brown, Deputy Brong- Ahafo Regional Commander of Motor Traffic and Transport Unit made this known to the Ghana News Agency in Sunyani on Wednesday.

He said one Kwame Owusu, resident of the village who witnessed the incident rushed to a police barrier in the area to inform the personnel on duty who stopped a taxi and chased Gyawu who was driving an Opel Wagon and arrested him.

ASP Brown said Gyawu told the police that he refused to stop after the incident for fear of being lynched by the residents, but was on his way to report to the police at Sunyani.

He said Gyawu is assisting the police in its investigations while the corpse had been deposited at the Sunyani Government Hospital pending autopsy.
