Crime & Punishment of Friday, 22 June 2012
A Kumasi Circuit Court presided over by Justice William Boampong, has sentenced a 22-year old driver’s mate to 18 years imprisonment for raping an imbecile.
Kofi Boadu pleaded guilty to the offence.
Police Chief Inspector Isaac Mensah Appenteng told the court that the complainant, Kwame Amenyo, is the elder brother of the victim and lives together with her at Atonsu-Bokro in Kumasi, where the convict also resides.
On February 3, last year, at about 1430 hours, one Joseph Adom, already serving a 10-year jail term, baited the girl with a gift of coconut.
He succeeded in luring her to the room of Boadu, where they gagged and took turns to rape her.
She reported her ordeal to the brother, who managed to locate them and caused the arrest of Adom but Boadu managed to escape.
The prosecution said Adom was tried and punished by the court while Boadu went into hiding until June 14, this year, when he was spotted at the Kuntanase Magistrate Court, where he had been brought to face trial for threatening another person.
He was immediately arrested as soon as he stepped outside the courtroom.
He admitted the offence in his caution statement to the police.**
