GJA to hold workshop on Combating Crime

Accra, Jan. 16, GNA - Journalists and Senior Police Officers would on Friday January 19 jointly participate in a workshop to discuss combating organized crime in Ghana.

The two-day residential workshop would be under the theme: The 'Role of the Media in Combating Organised Crime.'

The Ghana Journalists Association in collaboration with the Ghana Police Service is organising the workshop, sponsored by the British High Commission.

The workshop, which to be formally opened by the Minister of the Interior, Mr Albert Ken Dapaah would search for ways to improve Media-Police relations to enhance cooperation between the two institutions in exposing organised crime.

The workshop also seeks to increase the sensitivity of the Media to the importance of accurate crime reportage; and identify challenges confronting the Media in the pursuit of crime reporting and security issues.

It also aims at helping to improve the capacity of the Ghanaian Media in the investigation of crime cases; strengthen the ability of the Media to promote and contribute to dialogue as a vital part of crime education; provide informed analysis on crime issues and improve access of Ghanaians to information and crime cases and combat trends. Topics to be discussed include: 93State of Organised - Crime in West Africa"; 93Threats and Levels of Drug Trafficking in Ghana"; "Armed Robbery in Ghana - Search for Solutions"; 93Combating Organised Crime in Ghana - Challenges of the Criminal Code'; "Passport and Visa Racketeering in Ghana - Search for Solutions"; "ICT Fraud in Ghana - Search for Solutions" and 93Challenges of Crime Reporting in Ghana".

Resource persons include the Deputy Inspector General of Police, Dr. K.K. Manfo; Brigadier Francis Agyemfra (rtd), a Security Consultant and Professor Kwame Karikari, Executive Director of the Media Foundation.
