Court jails market loader five years for robbery

Nkoranza (B/A), July 16, GNA - The Techiman district magistrate's court has sentenced a 28-year-old loader at the Nkoranza maize market to five years in jail for robbery. Kwabena Amoateng pleaded guilty to robbing Mr. Alex Amisa, a Susu collector, of two mobile phones and GHc55.00 after threatening him with a toy pistol. Mr. Peter Akwasi Denteh, Superintendent in-charge of the Nkoranza District Police, told the Ghana News Agency that on May 28, 2008, whilst the complainant was returning to his house around 2030 hours, the accused approached him with a toy pistol and robbed him. He said Mr. Amisa was speaking on one of the mobile phones when the accused attacked him and fled with the phones and an unspecified amount of money. Mr. Denteh said Amoateng was arrested the next day at the Nkoranza lorry station. He said the police later retrieved four mobile phones including those of the complainant and eight SIM chips, a camera and a toy pistol from Amoateng's house.
