56 year man remanded for sexual assault

Cape Coast, June 8, GNA- Ekow Atta, a 56 year-old man who allegedly inserted his fingers deep into the genitalia of a six-year-old girl, resulting in her bleeding, was on Tuesday, remanded in police custody by a Circuit Court in Cape Coast.

Atta pleaded not guilty to the charge of indecent assault and would be re-arraigned before court on Tuesday, June 21. Prosecuting, Chief Inspector Kingsford Ockom told the court presided over by Mr. Samuel Asare Nyarko that Atta is a fisherman at Elmina who sleeps at the premises of a church by name 93Jesus Never Fails".

He said the complainant, Madam Aba Atta Kakra, who is a relative of the accused normally, takes shelter on his veranda when it rains.

Chief Inspector Ockom said on Wednesday, June 1 this year, at about 05:00hrs the complainant and the victim who is her daughter, took shelter at the veranda where the accused sleeps because it was raining.

He said the complainant later left her daughter who was asleep and went to the Jukwa market but on her return realized that blood was oozing out of the girl's genitals and upon questioning, she narrated her ordeal to her mother.

Chief Inspector Ockom said Madam Kakra immediately lodged a complaint at the Elmina police station but the case was transferred to the Cape Coast Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit where a police medical form was issued for the victim to be taken to the hospital.
