Amoateng's Bail Set At 6 million dollars

...lawyers ask govt for help
Lawyers for Hon. Eric Amoateng, the member of parliament (MP) standing trial for drug trafficking charges in the United States (US) say they are awaiting response from the foreign ministry for assistance to bail the MP.

Dennis Adjei-Brenyah, counsel for the MP, says a request has already been made to Ghana?s mission in the US to stand surety for Amoateng, whose bail is set as at 6 million dollars.

Adjei-Brenyah told an Accra-based radio station - Joy FM - he expects to hear from the foreign ministry soon.

Counsel had earlier said they are optimistic that he MP would be acquitted of the charge.

The Nkoranza MP and his accomplice Nii Okai Adjei are charged with conspiracy to transport and distribute heroin in the US, contrary to Federal Law.

The two men were arrested in New York two months ago for allegedly smuggling heroin with a street value of 6 million dollars.

They both appeared before the New York Eastern District Court on January 23

The next hearing has been scheduled for the 24th of February
