Youth of Enchi refuse to be engaged as labourers

Enchi (W/R) Sept. 30, GNA - Rehabilitation of the Enchi town roads had delayed because of the refusal of the youth to be engaged as labourers.

Mr Emmanuel Ansah, Foreman of K. B. Annan Contractors Limited working on the roads, said the project was far behind schedule because the youth had refused to be engaged as labourers because their colleagues teased them.

Speaking to the Ghana News Agency on Wednesday on the project which had delayed for more than a year, Mr Ansah said "the project is labour intensive, however the youth are reluctant to work as labourers because their friends teased them and call them names". Mr. Ansah said even though they were paid promptly, most of them desert after a month causing the delay.

He therefore, appealed to the Ghana Highway Authority and residents to bear with the company and give it more time to complete the project. Mr. Alphonse Amoesi a staff of the company said the project involved construction of culverts, bridges, reshaping, gravelling and tarring of streets.

Mr. Amoesi said there had also been a problem with the acquisition of chippings at a quarry at Bamiankor due to the frequent breakdown of machines used at the quarry.

The project was awarded to the company in January 2004 and scheduled to be completed within a year.
