NGO educates Health workers on medical waste management

Elubo (W/R), Sept 1, GNA - Allies in Development Partners (ADP), a Non-Government Organisation (NGO) working on HIV/AIDS education and has organised a workshop for health workers, barbers and hairdressers on medical waste management at Elubo in the Western Region. The workshop was to educate the participants on some precautions they have to take to prevent infection of the disease at their workplaces.

The Abidjan-Lagos Transport Corridors Organisation (ALCO) sponsored the workshop.

Mr Emmanuel Amokwandoh, the Executive Director of ADP said attention on prevention of HIV/AIDS was centred on sexual relationship at the expense of the other modes of contracting the disease. Mr. Amokwandoh said even though the other modes of transmission were not as intensive as the sexual relationship there was the need to educate the people on them.

He said the use of unsterilized syringes, blades and other barbers' instruments used on someone else could cause infection of the disease. Mrs Francisca Afful, Medical Assistant in charge of Elubo Health Centre, who was the resource person cautioned the participants to be extra careful when using syringes, blades and other sharp instruments on their patients and clients. Mrs Afful advised them to ensure that used instruments, which could not be sterilized, should be buried to avoid children from getting into contact with them.

Mr Amokwando donated 50 dustbins to the health institutions, some hairdressers saloons and barbers shops to help maintain their workplaces clean and tidy. Sept. 01 05
