NEPAD feeding programme launched in Nwinso

Nwinso (ER), Aug 25, GNA - A pilot school feeding project under the New Partnership for African Development (NEPAD) aimed at promoting child survival rate and increased school enrolment in rural areas was on Wednesday introduced to the people of Nwinso, a farming community in the Birim South District.

The Nwinso Methodist Primary School is one of the 10 schools selected nationwide for the pilot phase of the project which, when fully operational, would provide food to over 1.7 million pupils in basic schools by 2010.

Collaborating agencies of the project that, in the main, involves provision of launch for basic pupils in the pilot schools as from September include the ministries of Regional Co-operation and NEPAD, Health, Food and Agriculture and Local Government and Rural Development. Speaking at a meeting with the Nwinso community to drum-up support for the project, Dr Michael Egyir, a Principal Economist at the Ministry of Regional Co-operation and NEPAD, said the programme was timely since it would help reduce child morbidity and mortality.

Nana Acquah Frempong, the Birim South District Chief Executive, said since the district stood to gain so much from the project, every effort would be made to ensure that no one sabotaged it.
