Parent urged to demonstrate good behaviour

Accra, July 31, GNA - Mrs Victoria Opoku, Ga West District Director of Education on Saturday urged parents to demonstrate the qualities of honesty, decency and cleanliness to inspire their wards to emulate. "As agents of education, parents need to build strong character traits in their children since children can only be disciplined when they are brought up well at home."

Mrs Opoku, who was speaking on the theme: "The home as an agent of education" at the first speech and prize giving day of Christ Royal International School said situations where parents exhibited the habit of abuse, bribery and corruption exposed children to the emulation of such habits. She said where parents were always absent from the home and hardly saw their wards was not the best as the children were left at the mercy of video games, television and their peers. "Children from such homes easily pick up bad habits like drug addiction and truancy."

Mrs Opoku said parents should invest financially, emotionally and spiritually in their wards by paying their school fees promptly and providing them with the requisite materials they needed to enhance effective teaching and learning at school. She admonished parents to supervise learning at home and encourage their children to show interest in all subjects taught at school. The District Director of Education also advised parents to visit their wards' schools regularly to discuss with teachers how best their performance could be improved both at home and in school.

Mr Mac-Tetteh, Headmaster, advised parents to work hand in hand with teachers to ensure the provision of the best education for the children. He, however, appealed to all stakeholders in the education sector to do their best so that education, the bedrock for the promotion and development of the nation, was not shaken.

Ms Dorothy Tsera, overall best student for last year's Basic Education Certificate Examination and other students who distinguished themselves in the school's internal examinations were awarded book prizes.
