Ranking Member of the Health Committee, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has described government’s failure to evacuate Ghanaian students from Wuhan, a province in China, as “insensitive”.
According to him, waiting for the Corona virus to reach a risk level before Ghanaian students are evacuated makes no logic sense.
He therefore insisted government should evacuate Ghanaians in Wuhan immediately before they get exposed to the virus.
Akandoh’s comment comes after the minority gave three-day ultimatum for government to immediately evacuate Ghanaian students currently locked up in China, to a less prone area in the country or back to Ghana.
In response to government’s statement that there was no need for the evacuation, the ranking member argued that government is insensitive about the matter adding that the Minority will file a motion to debate on the matter on the floor.
“To set the records, we had the opportunity to meet officials of the Ministry of Health and we were expecting the minister to be there but unfortunately given their attitude towards corona virus none of them was there…but at the conclusion of the meeting it was a clear demonstration of the insensitivity of government at its peak that government insisted that they are not going to evacuate any students from Wuhan to Ghana. They gave certain reasons they that they are in constant touch with the student in Wuhan and that they are in good condition and that nobody so far has contracted the disease. Adding that they are assessing the situation as at when the risk level is high they will be able to evacuate them within 48 hours.”
“…why do you wait till the risk level is high before you do evacuation it doesn’t make sense, we think that they should make the evacuation whilst the risk level is low.” He added.
