Cell Phone Sellers At Kwame Nkrumah Circle Count Losses

Accra, April 28, Joy Online --The Nima police are investigating an attack on mobile phone sellers at the Kwame Nkrumah Circle on Tuesday during which a gang of motorbike riders looted several of their goods.

The motorbike riders, numbering over 30, used cutlasses and clubs to hack down wooden kiosks and glass cases displaying cell phones and accessories.

The attack followed a dispute between two members of the gang and workers of Taysec Construction Company working on the road.

The foreman, Sylvester Apeba, told Joy News that his colleagues had prevented two motorbike riders from using a section of the road that had been blocked to traffic.

Angered by the move the two riders informed their colleagues who stormed the area and began attacking both the workmen and the cell phone dealers in the area.

" We have to pay the people who supply us with the phones and cuurently we don't know where to get money to pay them," one phone seller says.

Two Persons Arrested In Connection With Gang Looting At Circle

The Nima Police have arrested two members of a gang of motorbike riders who raided mobile phone shops at the Kwame Nkrumah Circle.

The motorbike riders, numbering over 30, used cutlasses and clubs to hack down wooden kiosks and looted several mobile phones in the process.

However, in a swift response to the attack a police team swooped on the hideout of the gang at Nima on Tuesday and arrested two suspects in connection with the attack.

ACP Jonathan Yakubu in-charge of Greater Accra Regional operations who spoke to Joy News says ?We organized our operation men and went to Nima, Accra, New Town and Pig Farm and we were able to get about 15 unregistered motorbikes and we have also arrested two suspects who have been identified. We hope to get the rest of the suspects who took part in the attack by the close of day,? he says.

The attack on the mobile phone dealers followed a dispute between two members of the gang and workers of Taysec Construction Company who prevented them from using a section of the Kwame Nkrumah Circle road under construction.

Angered by the move the two riders informed their colleagues who stormed the area and began attacking both the workmen and the mobile phone dealers.

Some of the sellers told Joy News that they lost all their goods in the attack and have nothing to sell apart from owing their suppliers.

The police have mounted a search for the rest of the motor riders who have gained notoriety for causing mayhem in parts of the city.
