Rainstorm at Bompata damages 73 buildings

Bompata (Ash), Feb. 28, GNA - A severe rainstorm hit Bompata in the Asante-Akim South District on Friday damaging 73 houses and five public buildings. It also rendered 408 people homeless and destroyed property worth several millions of cedis.

The worse affected buildings were at the Bompata Presbyterian Secondary School where the offices of the headmaster and his assistant, computer laboratory, and staff common room had their roofs ripped off while the kitchen was razed down. The others were the market, Presbyterian Primary and JSS, the Local Authority Primary and Asankare Local Authority JSS, near Bompata. The affected people are putting up with friends and relatives.

Dr Lord Justice Gyamfi-Fenteng, the District Chief Executive, accompanied by Mr Michael Ataogye, the Co-ordinating Director, visited the town to access the extent of damage and expressed their sympathy to the victims. He noted that rainstorms were increasingly becoming a major cause of disasters in the country and advised the people to plant more trees to serve as windbreaks.

Mr Samuel Agyepong, headmaster of the school said necessary arrangements would be made to ensure that academic work would not be disrupted.
