Threat of Earthquake Still Exist- NADMO

JoyOnline -- Ghana still faces the threat of an earthquake five months after a warning from the Geological Survey Department that the frequency of seismic readings on the Richter scale is not favourable.

The National Disaster Management Organisation, (NADMO) says the latest reading of 2.0 on the Richter scale suggests that it has gone down from the previous 3.2.

It has, however, warned that the latest figure does not negate the possible occurrence of an earthquake in the country.

This warning comes three days after the world witnessed the worst natural disaster in forty years when a massive undersea earthquake triggered sea surges that have killed at least 26,000 people in Southeast Asia and part of Africa.

The disaster has sent thousands still missing, rendered millions of people homeless, with the threat of an epidemic looming in the disaster zone.

The Greater Accra Regional Co-ordinator of NADMO, Ben Brown told JOYNEWS that his organisation has put in the necessary measures to forestall any mishap.

He said the recently acquired helicopters for the military and the newly acquired table ladders of the Ghana National Fire Service that could reach as far as the seventh floor of a building was part of the measures.

He indicated that the organisation, which had recently secured about 150 vehicles nationwide, was in dire need of communication gadgets and called on government to accelerate the purchase of the equipment.

Mr Brown said although the indicators have not shot-up, the threat was still present because there could be an earthquake.

He cautioned the public to be prepared since earthquakes are unpredictable.
