The two demoted headmasters and their colleagues who were interdicted after charging unapproved fees following government roll out of the free Senior High School policy have brought disgrace to themselves and their families.
That is the verdict of Ekow Vincent Assafuah, a member of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) communications team.
“The head teachers have brought disgrace to themselves and their families because there is guidelines…don’t charge…simplicity” he stated.
The Ghana Education Service (GES) on Thursday announced that the Headmaster of Pentecost SHS in the Eastern Region, Wisdom Blasu and Assistant headmaster of Daffour Senior High School, Rev S.P Eleworkor have been relieved of their posts.
The Daffour headmaster S.C.K Agbeke is to be reprimanded for “poor supervision”.
A total of nine others were interdicted, Director General of the Ghana Education Service, Professor Kwasi Opoku Amankwaah told the media on Thursday.
The sanctions follows investigations into allegations of extortion against 19 school heads.
The interdicted heads include the Headmistress of Kwanyarko SHS Mrs. Florence Pra, Ahantaman SHS headmistress, Mrs. Mercy Ocloo, Ekumfi Ameyaw SHS Techiman Julian Okon and his Assistants, Jacob Barzon and George Frimpong Kwarteng and the Headmaster of Assiwa SHS Christian Attram.
The rest are La Presbyterian SHS in the Greater Accra Region Samuel Salamat who refused to attend GES investigations into the allegations.
Head of Aggrey Memorial in the Central Region, Rev. Franklin K. Boadu has also been invited to Accra to explain why he has under declared but accuse GES of placing more students than his school can accommodate.
Contributing to discussions on TV3’s New Day hosted by Johnnie Hughes on Friday, Ekow Vincent Assafuah said “it is not the mandate of a head teacher and headmasters to charge a student for desk. It is the sole responsibility of the GES”.
The NPP man said “we signed a social contract with the people of Ghana in 2016 to ensure that they have free SHS and not to surcharge student since it is free”.
