Water Crisis Hits Two Dangme Districts

Sege (Greater Accra) 28 '98 An acute water shortage has hit the Dangme East and West districts of the Greater Accra region following drought cause by delayed rainfall in the Accra plains this year. The problem is so serious that a government outreach team currently touring the area has called for the declaration of the two districts as water crisis areas which urgently require an emergency water supply prgramme. In about 26 villages visited by the outreach team, most river beds, dams and wells have dried up and the people complain that they are now digging up river beds, and walking long distances to reach water. At a meeting at Sege, the people brought along a bottle of brownish muddy water which they are drinking out of necessity.
