Ellembelle inaugurates agric census committee

A three- member Committee on the District Manager Team (DMT) of the Census of Agriculture has been inaugurated in the Ellembelle District of the Western Region.

The Census of Agriculture is a statistical operation covering the whole country and allows for the collection, processing, publishing and dissemination of information on the structure of agriculture and the state of development of the rural areas.

Data would be collected directly from households and institutions engaged in agricultural activities including crop farming, tree planting aquaculture and livestock rearing.

The Regional Director of Ministry of Food and Agriculture, Mr Salifu Abdel Ziblim noted that as agriculture is the major contributor to Ghana's GDP, there is the need for accurate information on the sector.

The Regional Statistician, Mr Ernest Nyarko said the overall objective of the census of agriculture is to produce and disseminate complete and reliable agricultural data to meet the needs of policy makers.

It would also help other users to make informed decisions and for monitoring development programmes aimed at further development of agriculture and the rural areas.

The Food and Agriculture Organisation is funding the nationwide exercise.
