Accra Floods: First Lady commiserates with market women

First Lady Dr Lordina Manama has visited some markets in Accra, which were affected by floods as a result of recent rains.

The visit is to ascertain damage caused by the flood and also to sympathize with them; places visited are the Mallam, Odawna and 31st December markets.

Dr Lordina said women play key role in the economy of the country hence they must be given all the support they need especially in this hard times when they have lost their goods to floods.

"Women are the backbone of every family; without them there will be no place called home" she noted. She pledged government’s commitment to support affected victims to bring them back to business.

She also expressed her condolences to families of people who lose their lives due to the explosion and the floods.

Though it was raining, the First Lady did not hesitate to work through it to find out how the market women were coping after the floods

The market women on the other hand could not hide their joy than to sing series of songs to welcome the First Lady.

The market women asked the First Lady to come to their aid since they have lost all their goods to the floods.

The Ministry of Gender and Social Protection together with MASLoC promised to support the affected victims.

Deputy CEO of MASLoC, Mustapha Abubakar said starting from Monday affected victims would be given loan; this he said will help them get back to business.

At the 31st December market; Minister for Fisheries and Aquaculture Sherry Aryittey said the First Lady would help to rebuild a daycare center, which has collapsed.

The school when rebuilt will help the market women pay attention to their businesses.

President of the Greater Accra market Association Mercy Needjan on behalf of the market women expressed appreciation to the First Lady for the visit; she was hopeful the First Lady would deliver all her promises.


The First Lady was accompanied by the Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture Sherry Ayittey, Minister for Children, Gender and Social Protection Nana Oye Lithur.

Not forgetting the National Women’s Organizer of the NDC, Hajia Zaynab Joyce Mahama, Deputy CEO of MASLOC Mustapha Abubakar and the Acting Deputy CEO of the Free Zones Board Oboubia Darko and other executives of the NDC.
