Wa District Area Councils inaugurated

Twelve urban and area councils within the Wa District Assembly have been inaugurated with a call on members to monitor contractors executing projects to ensure that quality work is done.

Those inaugurated included the Wa Urban Council, Ga, Kperisi, Boli, Gurungu, Funsi, Wechaw, Vieri, Kpongu, Bulenga, Busa and Dorimo area councils.

In a speech read for him at the separate functions, Mr Godfred Tangu Bayong, District Chief Executive (DCE), said as much as they concerned themselves with development projects that required their active participation, they should equally take keen interest in projects awarded on contract in their areas.

He told members of the area councils to give attention to revenue mobilisation to ensure that every rateable item in the community was levied.

Mr Tangu urged them to play leading roles in the initiation of programmes and activities that could address the development needs of the people.

He said the strengthening of the sub-district structures and involvement of rural people in developing their communities were strategies being pursued by the government to achieve accelerated development in the rural area.

Speaking at the inauguration of the Wa Urban Council, the Secretary, Mr Sakara Hamidu said his outfit had recorded a remarkable improvement in revenue mobilisation.

He said the Council collected 80 million cedis during the first quarter this year as against 140 million cedis for the whole of last year.
