Debate funding for private tertiary education – Prof Asabere-Ameyaw

Professor Akwasi Asabere-Ameyaw, the Vice Chancellor of the University of Education, Winneba, has called for a national debate on funding of private universities to deliver the best of education needed to raise quality leaders for the country.

Speaking at the first congregation of the Advance Business College, Prof Asabere-Ameyaw said the call was at the heart of the quest to maintain high standards in the delivery of education and to avoid a situation where brilliant students would be deprived of education because they could not afford it.

“Indeed, this is a critical area that should not attract only the concern of the private universities but also the public universities and indeed government,” Prof. Asabere-Ameyaw noted.

He said the situation had compelled many brilliant students to publicly call on benevolent institutions and individuals for support through the media to help address their predicament.

“We have to pause to ask ourselves whether that is the way to go. We have to wonder about what the psychological impact of such open solicitation of funds in the media has on such students,” Prof. Asabere-Ameyaw said.

The Advance Business College, affiliated to the University of Education, was established in 2005 to be part of the solution to the development of Ghana.

In all, 34 students graduated with degrees in Graphic Design and in Management Studies.

The President of the College, Mr Ebenezer Ampiah said the school’s achievements over the years had positioned it to contribute positively to the development of the country’s human resource capacity.

He said the College was entering the next phase of its institutional development with hope and inspiration for innovation, adding that, the institution would be rebranded and a restructured academic curricular introduced.

Mr Ampiah called on government to amend the GETFund law to be able to offer support to private tertiary institutions.
