Barclays Bank dragged to court

Barclay Bank Ghana, one of the leading multinational banks operating in the country has been dragged to court over its failure to settle its indebtedness to Diplomatic Wear Designs, a local company contracted to provide corporate wears to employees of the bank.

According to a lawsuit dated on 10th November 2014, the plaintiff is currently demanding US$35,000 representing the dollar component of special damages suffered as a result of a breach of contract.

The company, Diplomatic Wear designs, is also demanding Ghc73,000 representing the cedi component of the special damages suffered as a result of contracts to supply office wears for the staff of the bank in 2011.

Diplomatic Wear Designs together with officials of the bank’s procurement and human resource department took measurements of 786 employees of the bank who were to get their individual corporate wears between March and August in 2011.

Pursuant to this, the company furnished the bank with an invoice and moved ahead to deposit US$35, 000 for additional fabrics from China. After the company had completed 30 percent of the work, it was informed by the bank that the contract had been reassigned to another company.

Barclays Bank just picked a few items and paid for them while abandoning the greater number, although they were all customized.

But in a responds by Barclays Bank “We acknowledge receipt of your request below, however, this matter is currently sub-judice, consequently, we are unable to comment on same”.
