Ghanaian Players Abroad: Christian Atsu makes impact at Everton

Ghana AFCON star Christian Atsu made his biggest impact at Everton this weekend since joining them on loan from Chelsea as his cross saved the Toffees from a home defeat against Leicester City.

The 23-year-old had come off the bench as a 55th-minute substitute and his cross at the death ensured an own-goal by Matthew Upson, which helped settled the game 2-2.

Also in action for Leicester City was Ghana international wing-half Jeffrey Schlupp who lasted 62 minutes for the Foxes at the Goodison Park.

Striker Kwesi Appiah failed to break into the Crystal Palace squad for their 2-1 home reverse against Arsenal on Saturday afternoon.

In the SkyBet Championship, former Arsenal youth team attacker Zak Ansah could not make the Charlton Athletic squad as they won 3-0 away at Wigan Athletic.

In other games, Middlesbrough’s campaign suffered a setback as Leeds United defeated them 1-0. Ghana winger Albert Adomah played the entire regulation minutes of the game for Boro.

Youngster Koby Arthur warmed the bench for Birmingham City who slipped to a 4-3 loss against Brighton and Hove Albion.

Ghanaian-born Norwegian international, Alexander Tettey was booked in the 38th minute and played full throttle for Norwich City who won 3-0 against Watford. Bernard Mensah could not make the Watford squad for the game.

FRANCE

Black Stars deputy captain Andre Ayew was a full timer for Olympique Marseille who shared the spoils in a 2-2 draw with Saint-Etienne.

Defender Dennis Appiah was in impressive shape for Caen who posted a 4-1 win over Lens on Saturday.

Jordan Ayew and Jonathan Mensah‘s supposed clashed in the Ligue 1 could not come off due to late cancellation.

But former Ghana U17 striker Kwame Nsor was unused by bottom-placed Metz who held Stade Reims to a 0-0 stalemate.

GERMANY

Black Stars full-back Abdul Baba Rahman played the entire minutes of the game for Augsburg who drew 2-2 with giants Bayer Leverkusen.

Joe Gyau could not make the Borussia Dortmund squad as they won 3-2 at Stuttgart on Friday.

Kevin-Prince Boateng came off the bench to play the final 20 minutes for Schalke 04 who drew 1-1 with Werder Bremen on Sunday.

In the Bundesliga II, former Ghana regular Anthony Annan played 76 minutes for 1860 Munich who won 2-1 against St Pauli on Sunday.

German-born Ghanaian Reinhold Yabo played 68 minutes for Karlsruhe who drew 0-0 with Bochum on Saturday.

In the Liga 3, Ghanaian midfielder Evans Nyarko came off the bench to score a late equaliser for Borussia Bortmund II when they drew 1-1 with Hallescher FC.

ITALY

Juventus managed a slim 2-1 win over Atalanta. While Kwadwo Asamoah missed the game through injury, forward Richmond Boakye-Yiadom came off the bench in the second-half to play for Atalanta against his parent club.

AC Milan beat Cesena 2-0 at the San Siro. Both Michael Essien and Sulley Muntari sat on the Milan bench for the game.

In the Serie B, midfielder Amidu Salifu was booked in the 38th minute and played for Modena who lost 3-2 against Spezia.

Masahudu Alhassan scored the opening goal for Latina but got injured in their 2-0 win over Ternana.

Kingsley Boateng played 86 minutes for 10-man Bari who won 2-0 against Virtus Lanciano.

SPAIN

Experienced midfielder Derek Boateng did not make the trip with Eibar as they slipped to a 1-0 loss at Villarreal.

Atletico Madrid defeated Almeria 3-0. Ghana youth international midfielder Thomas Partey was not allowed by Atletico Madrid to play against them.

Athletic Club managed a slim 1-0 win over Rayo Vallecano. Spanish-born Ghanaian midfielder Inaki Williams played the last 25 minutes for Athletic Club but Fatau Mohammed played the entire game for Rayo.

In the Segunda Division, Ghanaian defender Kassim Nuhu was not in the Real Mallorca team that won 3-0 against Osasuna.

Razak Braimah conceded four goals as Sporting Gijon downed his Mirandes side 4-1.

NETHERLANDS

Attacker Elvis Manu made an injury return to play part for Feyenoord as they won 3-2 against Excelsior.

Shadragh Eghan also came off the bench to play for FC Twente when they slipped to a 2-1 home loss against Vitesse.

In the second-tier league, Ghanaian winger Edwin Gyasi scored the match winner for Roda JC as they beat VVV Venlo 2-1 on Saturday. His brother Raymond Gyasi also started the game for Roda.

Marcel Appiah played the entire game for NEC Nijmegen when they won 3-1 at Achilles ’29.
