It’ll be a "bonus" to win AFCON 2015 – Ghana FA boss

Ghanaian football authorities are not expecting the ultimate prize at the Africa Cup of Nations 2015, but will hope for a reputable finish.

In the event of annexing the trophy to end a three-decade medal drought, Ghana FA president Kwesi Nyantakyi said such a feat will be regarded as “a bonus”.

The Black Stars have not been given a specific target at the Nations Cup in Equatorial Guinea because a new coach Avram Grant took over barely two months ago.

However, the four-time African champions have been tasked to “do well” – going beyond the group stages, at least - at the continent’s football showpiece.

Nyantakyi is “hopeful that we’ll go far,” in an interview with Goal Ghana.

Although he is sanguine that a win is possible, he said it was prudent not to set a target for the ex-Chelsea boss in order to avoid the wrath of Ghanaians “in the event we don’t win.”

“It will be unrealistic to give him target to win trophy… If we win it will be a bonus but 2017 is our target,” Nyantakyi avers.

Ghana have been paired with Senegal, Algeria and South Africa in a unit that has been described as the group of death. The Ghanaians will open their campaign against the Teranga Lions Monday, January 19.
