Drugs do not enhance learning- Dr Asare

Dr J.B. Asare, of the Psychiatric Hospital has dismissed the notion among the youth that drugs enhance academic performance.

He said medical research has proved that good diet, sufficient rest and composure at classes are the vital elements in ensuring understanding of lessons by teachers and there is therefore, no need to resort to stimulants of any kind to achieve academic success.

Speaking at a lecture, under the theme "Drug Abuse" to pupils and staff of John Teye Memorial Institute near Amasaman in Greater Accra Region, Dr.Asare prevailed on the pupils that all drugs purported to keep students awake had negative effects on users later in life.

"Cola nuts, coffee and tea, all contain caffeine and cause harm from excessive consumption and must be avoided", he cautioned.

On intake of hard drugs like cocaine, heroine and marijuana, he cautioned that anybody who sniffs or smokes any, of them "losses control of thought' and lives in an imaginary world'

He, therefore, cautioned the pupils to resist peer pressure, refuse to experiment, and also check all information on application of drugs, for curative measures "because, once you get hooked on it, there is no return".

The pupils and staff later asked questions pertaining to drug abuse and what to do under pressure.
