KMA Spends ?16 Billion On Refuse Collection

The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) spent 16 billion cedis on refuse collection and tidying up of the Metropolitan area last year. The amount far exceeded the total revenue of 13 billion cedis generated by the assembly.

KMA Chief Executive, Maxwell Kofi Jumah says but for the intervention of government, it would have been virtually impossible for the Assembly to cope with the situation and also address equally important activities successfully.

He said the expenditure on refuse collection was a source of worry to the KMA and strategies had been devised by the assembly to reduce the burden.

The MCE said as part of strategies to lessen the financial burden of garbage collection on the assembly, the KMA had decided to introduce door-to-door refuse collection which would be paid for by beneficiary households.

"The initiative has already started in certain residential areas and would gradually be extended to all households and residences in the Metropolis", Mr Jumah stated.

He gave the assurance that the financial problems, notwithstanding, the KMA was still poised to improve upon the state of schools in the Metropolis through rehabilitation and expansion of facilities.
