KKD rape saga: Police abusing its powers - Lawyer

A private legal practitioner Samson Lardy Anyenini has accused the Police of abusing its discretionary powers in the indecent assault case involving fashion icon, Kwasi Kyei Darkwa (KKD).

According him, it is illegal for the Police to hold the ex-broadcaster for more than 48-hours when no formal charge has been leveled against him.

KKD was arrested on Saturday night at the African Regent Hotel for allegedly sexually assaulting a teenage girl who spent some time with him.

He has been in the custody of the Airport Police Command since his arrest.

The 49-year-old father of two has not denied having sex with the 19-year-old girl, but he has refuted claims that he sexually assaulted her.

Speaking to Starr News, Lardy Anyenini said the Police have no basis to hold KKD in custody.

“If they have not pressed charges, you cannot have any basis to hold the person in custody. You hold a person in custody over a particular crime for which you have charged them”.

The lawyer/media practitioner also wonders why the Police appears to be protecting the identity of the alleged victim involved in the case.

Meanwhile, attempts to secure bail for the popular MC Monday failed as both the prosecution and the accused teams arrived late for court.

He is billed to return to court for hearing today, Tuesday December 30.
