Ghana’s Parliament to sit today, Saturday

Parliament of Ghana will sit on Saturday to transact a crucial official business in connection with the upcoming District level elections.

The Electoral Commission (EC) has fixed Tuesday, March 3, 2015 to conduct District Assembly and Unit Committee Elections in Ghana.

The lawmaking body is supposed to take the instrument that will enforce the exercise through the various stages before its maturity.

According to the Majority Leader, Alban Bagbin, it has become “compelling” for the House to sit half day on Saturday for the “district and electoral area instrument to come into force.”

“There must be a compelling reason for MPs to sit on Saturdays. It has become compelling for us to sit outside the normal sitting days,” Bagbin said on the floor of the lawmaking chamber Friday.

However, Members of Parliament are unhappy with the weekend sitting since there is a health walk for MPs early Saturday morning and are also worried about what kind of attire they must wear to work on Saturday.

After a series of debate, the presiding Speaker, Ebo Barton Oduro ruled that Saturday’s sitting of the House should begin at 12 noon.
