Thirty farmers and fishermen awarded in Central Region

Thirty farmers and fishermen were awarded at the 30th Central Regional Farmers Day Celebration held at Gomoa Assini in the Gomoa West District on Friday.

They were awarded with items including fridges, wellington boots, deep freezers, spraying machines, plastic chairs, fertilizers, agro-chemicals and cutlasses.

Mr Robert Crentsil from Ajumako Ochiso was adjudged the Regional Best Farmer.

He received a citation, motor tricycle, 32 inches flat screen TV set, pans wellington boots, eight pieces cutlasses, a spraying machine, rubber washing bowls and a bar of key soap.

Seven district best farmers and fishermen were also awarded with similar items.

They were from Gomoa East, Agona West, Effutu Municipal, Mfantsiman Municipal, Ajumako-Enyan-Essiam, Ekumfi and Gomoa West districts

The theme for the celebration was: “East what we grow.

Addressing a large number of people to mark the occasion, the Regional Minister, Mr Acquainas Tawiah Quansah commended the award winners for their hard work.

He said the Ministry of Food and Agriculture (MOFA) and the Root and Tuber improvement and Marketing Programme was able to establish 17 hectares of commercial cassava planting materials multiplication filed in two municipalities and three districts in the region.

The Regional Minister however did not mention the specific areas.

Mr Quansah said Community Demonstration sites have been established to teach farmers improved methods of cassava, maize and sweet-potato production in 10 districts.

The districts are Cape Coast, Gomoa East, Mfantsiman, Ajumako-Enyan-Essiam, Agona West, Asikuma-Odoben-Brakwa, Upper Denkyira East, Awutu-Senya, Agona East and Komenda-Edina-Eguafo-Abriem.
