Deputy Minority Leader brings ‘bag of cocaine’ to the House

Proceedings in Parliament had to be suspended for 10 minutes on Tuesday, November 25 when the Speaker and members of the Majority were infuriated by an action of the Deputy Minority Leader, Dominic Nitiwul.

The Member of Parliament for Bimbilla Constituency had showcased a 12-kilogramme bag of rice on the floor, expressing wonder how that could have escaped the eyes of security agencies at the VVIP Lounge of the Kotoka International Airport in a handbag.

He was insinuating the 12.5kg of cocaine busted with Nayele Ametefe at the Heathrow International Airport in London.

Mr Nitiwul’s action infuriated the Majority Leader, Alban Bagbin, who pointed at the New Patriotic Party (NPP) as notorious for trafficking drugs.

According to Speaker Edward Doe Adjaho, the Deputy Minority Leader had confronted him earlier in the day about the cocaine issue in his office but he directed him to put it in a statement.

So, he was stunned to find the Leader raise the matter on the floor when he was asked to comment on the 2015 budget statement read to Members last Wednesday.

Minority Leader Osei-Kyei Mensah-Bonsu waded into the debate at his opposite number's comments concerning the NPP.

Mr Nitiwul duly apologised for his actions upon resumption of proceedings.

The leaders - of the Majority and Minority - also followed suit.
