ICU leader: Labour ministry ill-resourced

General Secretary of the Industrial and Commercial Workers Union (ICU) Solomon Kotei has asked government to commit enough resources to the Ministry of Employment and Labour Relations to help it resolve all issues to do with industrial unrests.

He said must consider it as one of the key allocations in the 2015 financial budget statement to be delivered in Parliament on Wednesday, November 19.

He was speaking to TV3’s Daniel Opoku in an interview on Monday.

“It is one ministry which though has a cabinet status is not resourced enough to be able to deliver as a very strong enforcement agency in this country.”

He charged government to invest more in labour market institutions rather than introducing new taxes that do not see the light of day.

“We see them in the past introducing new taxes that didn’t exist,” Mr Kotei said. “If previous taxes have failed what are the reason why for instance the condom taxes that they introduced vehemently is going to work.

“For us the budget is important.”
