I’m Hayatou’s potential heir - Nyantakyi

The president of the Ghana FA, Kwesi Nyantakyi, has said he is “not tired yet and full of energy” to run again for the presidency of the football body, adding his next target is to be at the pinnacle of Caf.

Nyantakyi, who is likely to stand for re-election, would have done 14 years by the time his tenure comes to an end, should he contest and win.

Responding to a question at the Presidential Commission of Inquiry looking into Ghana’s participation at the 2014 World Cup Thursday, the FA boss said: “Football system is like Parliamentary system of government, as long as you perform you continue.”

“We have to respect the sovereignty of the people. If the people think they will remove you, they will. You are not there by your might. It is better to be there if you are performing… if the time comes [for me to leave] I will let you know,” Nyantakyi said.

The football administrator, who is also a Caf executive committee member, said he has no plans to undermine the incumbent head of the continent’s football governing body, Issa Hayatou, because “I have strongest of relations” with him.

He said: “In future when he leaves, I’m sure I could be a potential candidate.”

Nyantakyi rallied Ghanaians to “support our own regardless of society, ethnicity and not bring them down. If I’m not in CAF, there is no guarantee that another Ghanaian could be there.”
