TP Mazembe suffer CL heartbreak

Ghana’s quartet Daniel Nii Adjei, Yaw Frimpong, Gladson Awako and Solomon Asante were handed starting roles as TP Mazembe missed out on reaching the 2014 CAF Champions League final on the away-goals rule.

The Ravens won 3-2 against Algerian side Entente Sportive Setif at the Stade du TP Mazembe in Lubumbashi to tie 4-4 on aggregate.

But Setif advanced to next month’s final against AS Vita Club of DR Congo with superior goals after winning the first leg 2-1.

Midfielder Nii Adjei scored on 21 minutes to cancel out Abdelmalek Ziaya’s opener on 9 minutes.

Malian Salif Coulibaly made it 2-1 for Mazembe after an assist from Ghana winger Asante and Jonathan Bolingi, who replaced Awako at the break, scored the third in the 53rd minute.

But ES Setif reduced the deficit with that important goal from Sofiane Youne with a quarter of an hour left.
