Godwin Armah wins Street Style competition

Twelve-year-old Godwin Ashitey Armah, who beat 15 other contenders at this year’s edition of the Red Bull Street Style Ghana competition, is to represent the country in Brazil in November at the world stage.

Godwin beat Proper in the final after the 16 players had displayed their skills and tricks on stage to the great admiration of the audience, who thronged the Car Park of the Accra Mall at the weekend.

For his prize, all-expenses for his trip to Brazil for the Red Bull Street Style World Championship would be paid for.

Former Black Stars player Laryea Kingston, who was among the three judges for the competition, expressed happiness that the freestyle soccer had come to stay in Ghana and encouraged other young talents to train hard to participate in the event.

The other two judges were Godwin Attram and Salim Baroudi.

The event also saw exciting performances by Stonnebwoy and Naterial with mixes from DJ Master Jay.

The first Red Bull Street Style competition in Ghana took place at the National Theatre where Bright Amoako-Danquah emerged the winner and represented Ghana in Italy 2011. Last year, Joel Asare unseated the defending champion to represent Ghana in Japan.

The Red Bull Street Style competition is a battle of tricks and skills between two players on stage. Currently in Ghana only a few talents are found in the game, however with the inception of the competition in 2011, many people have gotten involved and the audience participation has been heavily amazing.

The Red Bull Street Style started in 2008 in Brazil and has gradually grown to be the most patronised freestyle competition in the world.
