PIC was still-born - Denkabe

Mr. Aloysius Denkabe, Chairman of the Public Interest Committee (PIC) of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), has said his outfit was “still-born”.

The GFA, in 2011 formed a five-member PIC in accordance with Article 70 of its statutes, to liaise with the Ministry of Youth and Sports to facilitate the necessary facilities required for building the national football teams, ensure provision of funds by the Government for purposes of building the national football teams.

It was also mandated to formulate policies, which are necessary for building strong national teams, in accordance with directives of the Executive Committee and the Ministry as well as other functions as ascribed by the Executive Committee with respect to the Protocol on GFA/Government relations.

Appearing before the Justice Senyo Dzamefe Presidential Commission of Inquiry, on Thursday, he said there were several challenges that confronted the committee since formation.

“My Lord, there were issues of who to chair the committee, who should control it and who should have a bigger stake in it. We were also confronted with lack of interest from stakeholders, as well as busy schedules of committee members.

“Members of the committee were busy professionals and after series of follow ups on the work without any positive response, we gave up. The committee was still-born or poisoned to death slowly or a combination of both”.

Mr. Denkabe said, the committee also failed to perform, because it had no permanent secretariat to operate, whilst it also struggled with division of mind.

“My Lord, the committee also battled with division of mind, as to whether it was a watchdog or whistle blower, police or what”, he stated.

According to Denkabe, the Committee had meetings only twice since it was inaugurated and suggested that, it should reorganise based on the statutes of FIFA, GFA and national laws.

The five-member committee was made of Mr. Ernest Thompson, Mr. Tedi Sory, Mr. Abedi Pele and Mr. Oteng Arthur.
