Trader jailed for sleeping with mental patient

Two persons including a minor who took turns to have sex with a mentally challenged patient on Wednesday appeared before an Accra Circuit Court charged with conspiracy and unnatural carnal knowledge.

Isaac Akwasi Mensah a trader pleaded guilty to the charges and was sentenced to five years imprisonment on each of the charges. Sentences are to run concurrently.

The 16- year- old minor and a student, who was also in the dock with name withheld was however referred to the Juvenile Court for sentencing.

He also pleaded guilty to the charges before the court presided over by Mrs Rita Agyeman Budu.

Prosecuting Assistant Superintendent of Police Adiza Suleman told the court that the complainant is a trader and the mother of the victim.

Prosecution said Mensah and the student reside at Kamara, near Mamprobi in Accra.

Since August this year, Mensah started taking advantage of the 21- year- old victim, when there were no people in her house.

On September 14 at about 2000 hours; the complainant sent the victim to buy mosquito coil for her and while she was returning, Mensah took her into a fridge mechanic shop and had sex with her on the floor.

Soon after the act the minor also had sex with her.

When the victim got home and was questioned, she narrated her ordeal to the complainant.

A report was lodged with the Domestic Violence and Victim’s Support Unit, Mamprobi and the two were arrested.
