Akufo-Addo appeals to “old men” in NPP

A staunch supporter of Alan Kyeremanten in the flagbearership race of the NPP, Hilda Addo, has said the party’s two-time presidential candidate, Nana Akufo-Addo appeals mostly to the old folks in the Dankwa-Busia tradition.

According to the former MP for Kwadaso, the “old men” in the party are trying to foist their preference for the former attorney general on the rest of the party.

Akufo-Addo secured over 80 percent of the total valid votes cast in Sunday’s Super delegates’ ballot meant to whittle down the number of flagbearer aspirants from seven to five.

His closest contender Alan Kyeremanten, who was also seen as a frontrunner, managed just 7.97% of the votes.

The margin of victory has triggered calls for the other candidates, including Ghana's former Ambassador to the US, to throw in the towel and allow the party to acclaim the former foreign affairs minister as its flagbearer for 2016.

But Addo told Adom FM Tuesday that the Alan camp will not allow itself to be forced out of the race.

“We do believe that Sunday’s election turned out the way it did due to the constitution of the Electoral College that made the super delegates. It was tilted towards Akufo-Addo and we actually expected him to make 90%.

“Why does it appear that the old men are all supporting Nana Addo? It appears the old men who support him are trying to foist that position on the rest of us. The truth is Alan can still emerge flagbearer of the party, God willing”, she stated.
