Proliferation of Churches, good but… - CCG

The emergence of several churches in Ghana is good to the extent that it promotes the growth of Christian evangelism, Reverend Dr Kwabena Opuni-Frimpong, General Secretary of the Christian Council of Ghana said on Thursday.

But the “excesses” of some of those churches are worrying as they extort money from the people through “prophecies and miracles” rather than preach the Christian gospel, he said.

Reverend Dr Opuni-Frimpong made these remarks in a message to the sixth General Assembly of the Evangelical Presbyterian (E.P) Church in Ho under the theme, “God of life, lead us to justice, peace and dignity for wholesomeness.”

He said there was need for member Churches of the CCG to be cautious of the trend and safeguard “our members.”

Reverend Dr Opuni-Frimpong said events in Ghana and the world are a wake-up call for the Church to get to work to restore public confidence.

He said the challenges of corruption, dejection, suicidal tendencies and violent crimes called for social mobilization by the Church to influence “non-violence change in the country.

Reverend Dr Opuni-Frimpong called on Christians to follow the injunction in Jeremiah 29: 7.

There biblical Israel was admonished to “also seek the peace and prosperity of the city to which I have carried you into exile. Pray for the Lord for it, because if it prospers, you too will prosper.”

In her address to the Assembly, the Volta Regional Helen Adjoa Ntoso asked churches to “make deliberate efforts to mobilize communities to take actions to solve problems that affect them.”

“As politicians, public servants, religious leaders and people… Our service should stand on values of truth, integrity, morality, love and discipline which are core to the holistic development of the individual and the State.”

“We must be morally upright and fight all vices that tend to degenerate the values of society,” she admonished.
