Railway workers union satisfied with gov’t intervention

The Railway Workers Union (RWU) have expressed satisfaction on government intervention to review their poor condition of service and revamp the railway system.

In an interview with the Ghana News Agency in Accra, Mr Godwill Ntarmah, General Secretary of the Union said they had to call off their strike because government has assured them of addressing their problems after a meeting with President John Mahama.

He said the President said a proposal has been drafted to increase the current salaries of the railway workers, adding that, the union executives and management of the Company have agreed to the proposed salaries.

Mr Ntarmah said government has promised to consider ways of revamping the activities of the railway sector, by finding strategic investors to partner government to adequately re-modernise and revamp the entire sector.

It would be recalled that railway workers, issued an ultimatum to government about their intention to strike if government failed to address concerns on their low incomes and the growing challenges in the railway sector.

The union embarked on a nationwide strike on Monday July 2, 2014 in protest of poor conditions of service. Their strike left commuters plying the Accra-Nsawam and Accra-Tema routes stranded with many compelled to resort to road transport, which is relatively costly.
