Workers charge at Mahama over ailing economy

Draped in red and black, the Trades Union Congress (TUC) started converging at the Obra spot at circle from 0630am to embark on a demonstration to draw government's attention to the prevailing economic hardships.

The procession supposed to start at exactly 0830is still at the convergent point with scores of members of TUC being dropped off intermittently by their various organisation buses.

Buses from the Produce Buying Company, Ghana Tourist Authority and Ghacem among others dropped of employees, adding up to the about 500 people gathered at the Obra spot.

There is police visibility at the convergent point providing security to the protesters and passers-by including property

About 100 policemen are spotted at Obra spot looking on as the charged labour union blow horns and wave placards in anticipation of their demonstration despite a cloudy weather.

The police are grouped in teams around the Nkrumah circle, which is under renovation, under trees at the convergent point and at road intersections directing traffic.

Two ambulances are parked in the middle of the crowd with police vehicles interspersed around the grounds.



As at 0843am company buses are still dropping off people to take part in the demonstration and work still goes on for traders around circle.

TUC last week served notice of calling out simultaneously all its regional branches for a 24-hour nation-wide work stoppage.



The move, according to TUC officials, is intended to pressurize the John Dramani Mahama administration to, among other things, restore the 23 percent subsidy it has removed from petroleum products and revive the Ghanaian economy.
