Mahama criticized for reassigning Kunbuor

A Senior Lecturer at the Political Science Department of the University of Ghana, Dr Ransford Gyampoh, has picked on President John Dramani Mahama over his reassignment of Majority Leader and Minister in charge of Government Business in Parliament Dr Benjamin Kunbuor. According to the Political Scientist, Dr Kunbuor’s reassignment to the Ministry of Defence undermines parliamentary effectiveness. He was speaking on TV3’s News 360 on Wednesday, July 16. President Mahama earlier in the day had made a major reshuffle to his ministerial set-up. “My only challenge is the appointment of [Dr] Benjamin Kunbuor,” Dr Gyampoh mentioned.

He explained: “[Dr Kunbuor] stepped into the shoes of Alban Bagbin and he has garnered a lot of experience in his role as Majority Leader and so to take him off like that undermines parliamentary effectiveness.”

President Mahama in the reshuffle merged the Ministry of Information and Media Relations with the Ministry of Communications.

Dr Gyampoh suggested that other ministries also need to go through similar mergers.

He proposed that the Roads and Highways Ministry has to be merged with the Transport Ministry, the Fisheries and Aquaculture Ministry with the Food and Agriculture Ministry and the Youth and Sports Ministry with the Education Ministry.

“In trying to align, we must take into consideration ministries that could be described as duplicative, wasteful or obsolete.”
