Shop owners warned against off-loading goods during the day

The Agona Swedru Divisional Police Command has warned shop and store owners at Swedru to desist from off-loading their goods during day time, to reduce traffic congestion.

According to the Divisional Police Command, the Police would have no option than to tow those vehicles for a fee, or face the wrath.

Superintendent Issah Ahmed Yakubu, Agona Swedru Divisional Commander, who gave the warning at a press briefing at Swedru said the decision was to ensure the free flow of traffic in the Municipality.

It would be recalled that on Februray 9 this year, a dynamite which was blasted by Las Adventuras Construction Firm, constructing drainage on the Akora River, destroyed the bailey bridge.

According to the Divisional Commander, traffic jam at Swedru was causing a lot of delays in conducting businesses.

Superintendent Yakubu gave the assurance that more officers and men from both the Motor Traffic and Transport Unit and the Agona Swedru District Police Command would be deployed to check drivers who flout the laws.

The Division Commander said the Police would educate the drivers for one week, and ensure that recalcitrant ones were arrested and prosecuted.

He said vehicles coming from Winneba, Agona Abodom and Gomoa Aboso routes would no longer use the road at the back of the former Bomodwen Hotel, to reduce traffic from Chapel Square to the Texaco filling station.

He warned that cars coming from Awutu Bawjiase and Agona Asafo would not make any u-turn at the Texaco filling station.

Superintendent Yakubu cautioned drivers plying the Swedru township to comport themselves by following rules and regulations governing the driving profession.

According to the Divisional Commander, the traffic congestion at Swedru was a source of worry to the Divisional Police Command, bemoaning that entering Swedru should not take more than five to 10 minutes, but at the moment it takes more than 30 minutes to cross the Swedru town due to traffic congestion.

The Divisional Commander appealed to the Ministry of Road and Highways to speed up the construction of the bailry bridge on the Swedru By- Pass road on the Akora river to ease traffic congestion.
