Appropriate technologies key to sustainability in mining sector

Mr Kwame Addo Kuffour, the Vice President of the Ghana Chamber of Mines, has said scientific knowledge and appropriate technologies held the keys to resolving the economic, social and environmental challenges in the mining sector.

He described the theme for the 86th Annual General Meeting as appropriate as it sets the tone for strategic programmes on innovation and technological evolution as a major tool enhancing sustainable business growth.

Mr Kuffour was speaking at the 86th AGM of the Ghana Chamber of Mines on the theme: “Sustaining Business Growth through Innovation in a Challenging Mining and Energy Environment”.

He said the significance of innovation in the mining sector was a subject that needed more attention as the industry was continually confronted with new challenges. He said in spite of these challenges, the Chamber's commitment to making mining a catalyst for development was unflinching.

“The industry has been relentless in its efforts to make a profound impact in the growth and sustainability of the Ghanaian economy,” he said. He said the significant contribution of the mining sector to the country's development could not be overemphasized, adding the socio-economic benefits of mining were invaluable.

“The industry is committed to addressing the needs of its members, government and the host communities through its endeavours,” the Vice President said. Mr John Ferreira, President, Ghana Chamber of Mines, said the Chamber would work with the appropriate authorities to strengthen, enforce and implement the regulations regarding the mining sector.

He said there was a lot the Chamber would do to protect the environment where mining activities were taking place. The President said the Chamber would continue to partner government and other stakeholders to make mining meaningful to its citizens.

Dr Kwabena Donkor, Chairman of the Parliamentary Select Committee on Mines and Energy, said very little had been done with the compliance of mining legislations.

He said the time had come for operators, stakeholders in the mining sector and the entire country to consciously respect the laws governing the sector. Dr Donkor urged Executives of the Chamber to ensure that mining companies comply with the laws.
