Tomato prices down in Tamale - Survey

Prices of some major commodities in the Tamale Metropolis have seen sharp reductions while others remained stable for the fourth consecutive week, a GNA survey in the Tamale Central and Aboabo markets revealed on Friday.

The survey in the two main markets showed that prices of tomatoes, local rice and groundnuts fell in the week to Friday compared with the same period last week.

For example, the survey in the two main markets indicated that prices of tomatoes, which sold at GH9.00 a bowl dropped to GH6.00, while local rice shed GH2.00 to now sell at GH4.00 and groundnuts reduced marginally from GH6 to GH5.50.

Commodities such as wheat, yam, maize and cowpea, among others remained unchanged. On the other hand, millet and pepper recorded slight price increases in the week, going up GH0.50 to GH3.00 and GH4.00 respectively.

In some major markets in Accra, commodity prices remained relatively stable, selling at the same prices on Friday as last week. In the Nima market for example, a bowl of red millet, which was sold at GH9.00 last week, remained unchanged on Friday while the price of soya bean is stable at GH5.00.

Other commodities such as beans, onion, groundnuts, tomatoes and pepper are all stable in the week to Friday. The story is not different from the Malata market, where prices have remained stable over the week.

A bowl of groundnut in the market is going for GH10.00, soya beans at GH5.00 and beans is GH7.00 while a bowl of local rice is sold at GH 8.00. A bowl of tomatoes remained unchanged at GH12.00 and garden eggs for GH6.00 as well as five fingers of plantain at GH 3.00 and a big tuber of yam is sold for GH5.

An olonka of pepper was sold at GH4.00 for the red pepper and GH3.00 for the green pepper. At the Kaneshie Market, three pieces of ripe plantain are being sold at GH2.00 while four pieces of unripe plantain sold at GH2.00 with a cup of raw agushie also going for GH4.00.

A medium size of smoked salmon fish was sold at GH5.00 while five pieces of small smoked herrings sold at GH2.00. Two big tubers of yam are going for GH5.00 while a heap of small-sized cassava is being sold at GH1.00 and GH2.00 for five medium sized ones. A bowl of tomatoes is going for GH 5.00 and GH4.00 respectively, depending on their sizes.

A bowl of maize is being sold for GH2.00 while a bowl of groundnuts is selling at GH9.00, and a bowl of pepper going for GH5.00.
