Daily minimum wage to be pegged at GH¢6: reports

The daily minimum wage for 2014 is likely to be pegged at Ghc6, TV3 has gathered.

Though participants in ongoing negotiations have been tightlipped on the new figure, TV3 can report that Organised Labour wants a quick settlement on the amount so that negotiations for a base pay can begin.

“Currently, we are discussing the national minimum wage for 2014,” said Secretary General of the Ghana Trades Union Congress (TUC), Dr Kofi Asamoah, “and then immediately thereafter we look at the base pay and what can be done.”

Speaking to TV3’s Daniel Opoku on Friday, February 28, Dr Asamoah said conclusion on negotiations will be arrived at soon.

“The national minimum wage begins implementation immediately it is concluded, so if it delays, it goes against the ordinary and vulnerable in the society, whose interest the national minimum wage serves as a safety net.”

The current minimum wage is Ghc5.24; it was increased from Ghc3.73 in 2011.
