Tech. regulations and standardisation key in economic growth - TRAQUE

The Trade Related Assistance and Quality Enabling Programme (TRAQUE) of the Ministry of Trade and Industry is calling for a national consensus on the best practices for product standards and regulations.

The programme funded by the European Union is organising a forum on the theme: "Technical Regulations and Standardisation in Ghana"; to bring together national stakeholders to deliberate on standards and regulatory issues.

A statement issued by TRAQUE said better standards would create better opportunities for the export of goods and services from Ghana, equality between domestic and imported goods on the national market and a higher level of protection for the safety and health of consumers.

It added that all stakeholders including representatives from various ministries and related departments and agencies, standards-related institutions, companies and trade associations are invited.

TRAQUE FORUM ON TECHNICAL REGULATIONS AND STANDARDISATION

As part of the growing demand for compliance in international trade, the Trade Related Assistance & Quality Enabling Programme (TRAQUE) funded by the European Union and implemented by of the Ministry of Trade and Industry (MoTI) is organising a forum on Technical Regulations and Standardisation in Ghana.

Ghana is developing technical standards which guarantees consumer safety, market transparency and meeting the needs of the consumers.

There is widespread evidence that compliance challenges are becoming more complex as non-tariff measures are proliferating and becoming more difficult for developing country exporters to meet.

It is therefore paramount to find solutions for better standards which would create better opportunities for the export of goods and services from Ghana, equality between domestic and imported goods on the national market and a higher level of protection for the safety and health of consumers.

This forum seeks to find a national consensus on best practices in technical regulations and product standards so as to meet the rapidly growing trend among people and organisations across national borders. Key issues to be discussed include:

• Globalisation and the growing demand for compliance in international trade



• The potential of value chains for industrial and export development



• Quality as a driver for manufacturing sector development



• Role of the national quality infrastructure which involves standards, technical regulations, testing, inspection, certification, accreditation, metrology, quality management and market surveillance

The details of the event are as follows:

Venue: Auditorium of the Ghana College of Physicians and Surgeons, Ridge, Accra.

Time: 9:00 a.m. – 16:00 p.m.

The forum is open to all National stakeholders including representatives from various Ministries and related Departments and Agencies, standards-related institutions, companies and trade associations.
