NDP wants Deputy Info Minister sanctioned

The National Democratic Party (NDP) has taken exception to comments passed by Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, a Deputy Minister of Information and Media Relations, regarding a speech delivered by the Party’s Founder, Nana Konadu Agyemang-Rawlings.

According to the NDP, Mr Murtala was not privy to the full speech but “went ahead to rain insults and attack the Former First Lady by questioning her capacity to comment on national economic issues”.

This was contained in a statement issued by the Party on February 5, 2014.

Signed by General Secretary Hayford Francis Amoako, the statement petitioned President John Dramani Mahama to sanction the Member of Parliament for Nanton Constituency.

The Party said the speech delivered by Mrs Agyemang-Rawlings at a ceremony organised by the Private Investors Protection Agency (PIPA) was apolitical and devoid of insults.

“The Former First Lady has never engaged in politics of insults and definitely does not do things because of media attention.”

NDP was more disturbed by the roping in of Former President Jerry John Rawlings by the deputy minister “with his insults by saying that "the way her husband JJ Rawlings managed tax revenue 20 years ago is the same way the current government is managing taxes".

“If a personality like the Former First Lady who for 19 years occupied the position of First Lady and has mass experience in numerous areas, in the view of the Deputy Minister does not have the capacity to express her opinion on economic issues, then who can in this country?”
