Christian Council mourns Komla Dumor, Prof. Ewurama Addy

The Council has received with profound sadness and deep grief the sad news of the passing away of Prof. Ewurama Addy on Tuesday, 15th January and Mr. Komla Dumor on Saturday, 18th January 2014 respectively.

On behalf of the Heads of Churches/Organisations of the Council, and on my behalf, I wish to convey our heartfelt and deepest condolences to the families of these great Ghanaian fallen giants.

The Council recalls fondly the contributions of Prof. Addy to its work, especially during the 2012 General Elections Peace Campaign Project, which was undertaken by the Council. She volunteered to be the co-Chair of the Eminent Persons Group that was formed by the Council to interface with political parties and other key stakeholders to facilitate peace. This, she did with passion and excellence.

She played this key role effectively together with other eminent persons such as Most. Rev. Prof. Emmanuel Asante, Rt. Rev. Prof. Emmanuel Martey, Pastor Dr. Mensa Otabil and Ambassador K. B Asante in fostering national cohesion and peace before, during and after the general elections.

Prof. Addy became an inspiration to many young women who wanted to study Mathematics and Science after becoming the first woman of professorship in science at University of Ghana, Legon, and subsequently the Quiz Mistress for the famous National Science and Mathematics Quiz for Senior High Schools.

The Council also mourns the sudden departure of Komla Dumor. Komla was a trail blazer in broadcasting in Ghana and projected Africa at the international level through his outstanding performance at the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC).

Komla’s passion for excellence, objectivity and innovation is one that is worth celebrating and emulating by journalists. He was a symbol of inspiration and hope to many young people in Africa.

The death of Komla and Prof. Addy is indeed a big blow to us as Ghanaians, and Africa as a whole. At this time of bereavement, we pray that God strengthens the families of Komla and Prof. Addy, and ask the grace of God to see them through.
