Frank Agyakum dismisses NPP Akan party claims

Spokesperson for ex-President John Kufuor is calling for a thorough interrogation of claims that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) is an Akan party.

Frank Agyakum is convinced the claim is more of a perception than a reality but says party leaders must begin to discuss the issue and resolve it once and for all.

His comments follow statement by a leading member of the party, Joseph Ayikoi-Otoo that NPP will remain in opposition if the party does not resolve the Ashanti-Akyem faction within the party.

In a reaction Mr. Agyakum told Citi FM the Ashanti-Akyem controversy is a creation of opposition elements to denigrate the party and was disappointed that some members of the NPP have bought into that controversy and are now parroting it.

He said having been a member of the party for several years, he can attest to the fact that the NPP is a broad base party, whose membership cut across different ethnic groups across the country.

Frank Agyakum, however, noted it is time for the party to take a critical look at the issue, whether perceived or real, and bring a finality on it.

"I believe we should approach this issue with a lot of circumspection... If somebody has brought it up it's better to look into it so that if there is a truism in it, we resolve it forever," he stated.
