NPP suspicious of EC's call for electoral reforms

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) says it is ‘suspicious’ that Electoral Commission (EC) will bury or distort recommendations submitted by political parties, in their efforts to reform and improve the electoral process.

According to a statement released and signed by the NPP’s National Chairman, Jake Obetsebi-Lamptey, Ghana has on several occasions been subjected to the practice of referring its crucial matters to “some faceless committee or body then being buried until forgotten”.

The statement comes in response to calls to include political parties and its members in processes that will bring reformation and upgrade to the electoral system.

However, the major opposition party believes that such action will only be effective if “this exercise if the E.C. were to consult and announce a receiving body that would work with the E.C. to produce a final draft of suggestions".

The statement further reads “This body could be based on the legal and technical sub-committee set up out of the IPAC meetings on the biometric registration and verification.

“The E.C. should also inform the world about the further actions it will take post the receipts of the suggestions”.

The NPP concluded by expressing its readiness to honor the Electoral Commission’s invitation but cautioned all citizens to make their “voices heard on this critical issue”.
