Mills’ 1 Year Anniversary: Gov’t has not given us a pesewa...

Spokesperson for the Planning Committee set up by President John Dramani Mahama to commemorate the one year anniversary of death of former President John Evans Atta Mills, Mr. Kofi Nyantakyi, has sought to set the records straight on funds raised for the anniversary as well as the construction of the Atta Mills Memorial Research Library affiliated to the Cape Coast University.

Mr. Nyantakyi said the funds raised so far were from individuals and groups who, out of their own volition, offered to help make the celebrations memorable.

Speaking to Kwami Sefa Kayi on "Kokrokoo" on Peacefm on Tuesday, he noted that though it is incumbent on government to fund the anniversary of the late president, who was popularly known as ‘Asomdwehene’, they have enough funds to cater for the celebrations; “however, when we are short of funds we will fall on government”.

“Government has not contributed even a pesewa to the 1st anniversary of the late Prof. Atta Mills; neither have we borrowed money from somewhere. Funds received are from public-spirited individuals and corporate entities who have willingly offered their services to the success of the occasion. Instead of going out to borrow money, we are depending on donations…” he asserted.

Mr. Nyantakyi also disclosed that the Atta Mills Memorial Research Library, which President John Dramani Mahama will be cutting sod to outdoor, was particularly funded by telecom operators and corporate bodies.

He reiterated that the details of the budget for the anniversary will be published for all to see after the celebrations.

Meanwhile, the funeral committee has urged Ghanaians to observe a minute silence and pray for the soul of the late Professor at 2:15pm, on 24th July, the date he (Prof Mills) died.
